On November 16, the Infante D. Henrique Nautical College (ENIDH) inaugurated the International Maritime Safety Centre (CISM), a project fully funded by the PRR (Recovery and Resilience Plan) under the Hub Azul School programme. The ceremony coincided with the National Maritime Day celebrations, reinforcing the strategic importance of the maritime sector in Portugal.
During the event, the activities and capabilities of the new centre were presented, followed by a guided tour of the facilities, which demonstrated the high level of technology and infrastructure available.
The CISM, built on the ENIDH campus, represents a milestone for maritime education and training in Portugal. It is prepared to teach courses in accordance with the STCW Convention (International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers), which regulates the international standards of training and certification for seafarers. In addition, the centre offers conditions for specialised training courses, such as working at heights and sealing holes and floods on ships, which are essential for guaranteeing the safety of operations on board, “areas that are essential for guaranteeing the safety of the functions and activities carried out on board,” the institution said in a statement.
According to ENIDH, the CISM is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, certified according to the requirements of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) codes, including the Fire Safety System Code and Life-Saving Appliances. This will allow trainees to use equipment during their training that is identical to that on board ships, providing a level of training that is practical and in line with the demands of the sector.
With this new centre, ENIDH strengthens its position as a national and international benchmark in maritime training, contributing to the development of essential skills for safety and efficiency in maritime activities.
