The project developed by School of Tourism and Technology of the Sea (ESTM) of Peniche, part of the Polytechnic of Leiria and Hub Azul Peniche, has been selected for the final of the Ocean Hackathon 2023, The event will take place in Brest, France, on 19 December.
The project, called Galene, uses artificial intelligence to tackle ocean challenges, with a view to protecting ecosystems and biodiversity. This innovative solution seeks to maximise marine preservation by integrating data processing and conservation, addressing critical issues such as carbon capture, food security and coastal protection, which are key to combating climate change.
This initiative arose from the local edition of the Ocean Hackathon 2023 in Peniche, a 48-hour event where global teams competed to develop prototypes that respond to challenges related to marine sciences and the blue economy. In Peniche, the event was organised by Polo Hub Blue Peniche - Smart Ocean, by Hub Azul Portugal and the Polytechnic of Leiria, with the support of partners such as MARE, CiTUR and the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute.
Sérgio Leandro, director of ESTM and scientific coordinator of Smart Ocean, highlighted the success of the local event, emphasising the importance of initiatives that stimulate innovation and the development of the blue economy through science and technology.
ESTM's participation in the Ocean Hackathon final not only reinforces Peniche's role as a centre of excellence in marine innovation, but also demonstrates the positive impact of partnerships on the advancement of ocean technology.
