– The central structure of the Hub Azul de Leixões (HAL) will be installed in pole 12 of the logistics platform of the Port of Leixões – pole 2.
– The Blue Biobank of the North, an integral part of the HAL, will be located at CIIMAR (Cruise Terminal of the Port of Leixões, Matosinhos).

The Hub Azul Leixões (HAL) is a scientific infrastructure, specifically installed in a port area, which will make it possible to fill the shortage of test areas in a relevant environment in the country, reinforcing the development and testing capacities of ocean technologies in favor of a blue economy, more decarbonized and sustainable in the context of the opportunities arising from the climate and digital transitions, at international level.
At the same time, it will also contribute to the development of technologies with application in the monitoring of the marine environment, strengthening the management capacity of the respective ecosystems and improving the “health of the oceans”.
HAL's main strengths include:
– Investment in marine technologies for offshore development;
– Engineering testing of materials and systems (able to withstand ocean conditions);
– Creation of a biobank and a blue biotechnology laboratory;
– Scientific diving center;
– Promotion of ocean literacy through schools, universities and polytechnics.
