On 3 June 2025, during a meeting of the Hub Azul Portugal network in Peniche, members had the opportunity to visit the ongoing construction of the future Hub Azul Peniche – Smart Ocean facilities.
The visit was guided by Sérgio Leandro, Director of the Escola Superior de Turismo e Tecnologia do Mar (ESTM) at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria and Scientific Coordinator of Smart Ocean Peniche – Hub Azul Peniche. He presented the project details and construction progress, which began on 19 July 2024 and is currently proceeding on schedule.
The Smart Ocean Open Labs will be a center of excellence dedicated to the Blue Economy, fostering collaboration between universities, companies, and public entities. Equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and cutting-edge technology, the hub aims to accelerate digitalization and decarbonization in the maritime sector, fully aligned with the objectives of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
This initiative reinforces Hub Azul Portugal’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the advancement of a knowledge-based blue economy in Portugal.
